PrEP Status in Australasia
Truvada® is approved by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in May 2016. It is now listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). It is not listed in New Zealand.
An application is before the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC), if supported it is likely to become available in late 2016 – early 2017.
Ways the Drug Can be Accessed
The Australian Government allows people to import the drug through the Personal Importation Scheme.
This means that the the proprietary as well as generic drugs can be imported. Online internet pharmacies sell Truvada® as well as generic equivalents.
A number of research projects make PrEP available.
